Nestled in a Chinatown hawker centre is a rare lunchtime gem – Mee Siam with gravy made specially from fruit juice ($3).
The new relationship between thin bee hoon and light fruit juice gravy base is a match made in heaven, so much so that the dish won the Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2016.
By innovatively replacing the traditional Assam paste with fruit juice, the dish gains a citrus tang to each bite, and the overall gravy feels much smoother. You’ll definitely feel it as each drop slides down your throat.
This dish isn’t actually the stall’s speciality however. Aptly named “Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa”, the stall’s Asia Delight Laksa ($3) is their top-seller. Like the Mee Siam, their version of Laksa is slightly modified to give it a greater taste, by replacing coconut milk with fresh coconut juice.
Finally, the stall serves Mee Rebus ($3), with a thick, flavourful and gooey gravy. This dish replaces the gravy’s flour with real potato for a rich texture you can savour with each delightfully heavy bite.
